Steps to Becoming a Mentor
• All tutors must attend a training session and pass a criminal background check (Check our calendar for dates).
• During the training sessions, volunteers will learn what to expect their first day of tutoring.
• Tutors receive subject material resources and information to assist with tutoring sessions.
Frequency of Tutoring
• PIE tutors have a commitment of at least once a week for one hour for at least one year.
• Tutoring takes place during school hours for the elementary schools.
• Tutors may work with up to three students at one time who need support on the same skills.
• There is no tutoring on holidays, specific testing times, and during the summer.
(PIE staff will communicate times when the school is closed and when testing is taking place.)
Levels of Tutoring & Areas of Tutoring
• Tutors help students that are in fourth grade in Montgomery Public Schools.
• Tutors assist students who read below grade level.
• Tutors assist students who perform math below grade level.
• Students are referred to the program from the school based on grades and/or test scores.
